Using Flight Simulators to Build Proficiency
Presenters: John Walters, Paul Diette, Gary Kearney
Flight training devices ("flight simulators") can be helpful to pilots seeking to build skills and proficiency. The presenters will discuss how they have used simulators at Legacy Flight Training, and at home, to leverage real-world IFR training at home. Key themes will include How to set up a simulator at home; Real-time sources of weather, NOTAMs, winds aloft, etc.; Replicating avionics installed in your aircraft; How to manage automation to build muscle memory; AI-drive ATC services; and Logging time.

Developing Your Personal Minimums
One tool available to pilots to mitigate risks is to develop “personal minimums” ahead of a flight to support clear and effective aeronautical decision making. Many pilots are aware of this concept, have a sense of what their personal minimums may be, but do not write them down. This can lead to pilots rationalizing a “flex” or lowering their minimums to be able to fly a flight. This workshop will discuss personal minimums, how to set them, and provide time for attendees to think about and document their personal minimums.

Cross Border Flying Tips
 |
For some PMOPA members coming from the U.S., this may present an ideal opportunity to fly your first international trip in your Piper M-Class aircraft (or any aircraft for that matter). If you will be flying from the U.S. to Canada, advance planning is required as you must have certain equipment installed (or received a waiver), FCC licenses, customs decals, and proof of citizenship, as well as receive permission to fly internationally prior to departure.
The process for international flying takes some time to prepare, yet the satisfaction from flying internationally is rewarding. Review cross-border requirements going into Canada and back to the U.S.
If you're unable to meet the requirements to fly internationally, consider flying into Plattsburgh, NY (KPBG), renting a car, and driving from there to Montreal. The drive is just over one hour through beautiful southern Quebec. While you will still need proof of citizenship to cross into Canada and return, you won't need to get an FCC license, purchase a customs decal, and/or register your passengers and transmit that information to receive trip authorization.

- May 1st - 90% refund
- May 31st - 50% refund
- After May 31st - no refund
PMOPA incurs costs for an event, even if a registrant cancels. The closer to the event date that the registration is cancelled, the higher the costs incurred by PMOPA. Cancellation fees help offset those costs. PMOPA leadership may consider exceptions to this policy in limited cases of hardship (e.g., hospitalization, death in immediate family) although exceptions to this policy are not guaranteed to be granted.
